Dauphin Island, Alabama
Hey everyone! Here is a quick post about Dauphin Island for those of you who are following me for the travel insights. This is basically going to be just a quick review of the island based on what I encountered there. From time to time you may see posts like this on my blog. 😉
First off, it is a neat little island. You cross this long bridge to get there. Quiet the sight to enter. Have your passenger get their camera ready if you like entry photos from the road. Once there you have 2 choices as far as beaches. You will either turn left and head to East End Beach or turn right to go to West End Beach. My beach of choice was East End. Parking was free and super close to the beach, there is a big fort to explore for those history buffs, tiny shells, driftwood and pelicans. You can sit on the beach and watch the pelicans on Pelican Point. Note to rvers…we have a 32 ft class c so we were able to park right next to the beach, I am not sure I would try it if I were pulling a bigger TT.
West End Beach was my least favorite of the two. Parking was free while we were there but, at times it costs $5 to park. From the parking you walk and walk and walk. If you want to exercise your calf muscles this is for you. You walk through some grassy spots that home the noseems, tiny black bugs that like to bite. Once you are to the water there are not many shells at all and very little driftwood. It did seem that it would be a good swimming spot. If you knew how much I like looking for shells you can see why this was not my fav beach. Still a beach tho, and still beautiful.
Dining spots are at a minimum on the island. There are some but, no chain restaurants, just local stuff. I normally prefer the local places. Sadly, the one restaurant we chose could use some improvement both in decor and menu selection. I happen to be allergic to fish and there was only salad, burger or chicken tenders as an option for me.
For those rvers out there. There are two rv parks on the island. My advice is to make your reservation well in advance. We did not and could not get a spot, no cancellations or anything and this was in late March. It was not a big deal for us since we were only spending the day and night if available. If you want to spend more time there you will definitely want to reserve in advance.
All in all, it was a nice day trip and could make for a relaxing week on the beach.
