Dia de los Muertos, El Mercado, San Antonio, TX
Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday celebrated in the US on Oct. 31st – Nov. 2nd. It consists of creation of altars, special foods, sugar skulls and basically a fiesta remembering family members that have passed on. While visiting San Antonio we lucked up on being here during this holiday. We had already planned on going to El Mercado, the Historic Market Square in San Antonio, full of traditional Mexican items, but just so happened to be there for Dia de los Muertos.
Bright colors, fresh made churros, live music, skull face painting, tacos and marigolds to name a few things. Awesome and delicious! No churros can beat fresh made ones with chocolate to dip in! Although I don’t celebrate Dia de los Muertos myself, it is always exciting to see how other cultures do things.
Parking is limited at the market so we took an Uber for the less stress option. There are also some delicious looking Mexican restaurants at El Mercado so come prepared for lunch or dinner. We did the street food option which was slightly disappointing. I was hoping for more options at the booths, but you can get a version of Mexican street corn, although not the best version, tacos and sausage on a stick. The churros, as I mentioned before, were fabulous! Also, it’s best to pay with cash! I hope this small glimpse into a big holiday and culture will inspire you to get to know your neighbors no matter who they are or what traditions they hold. Better yet, travel and see how others live. <3
